2025 Favorite Images
I’m delighted to share my favorite images from this past year. The Hudson Valley continues to inspire me and I worked on three ongoing projects as well. In the winter I traveled to Nicaragua to finish my book project – In the Garden of Eden. Locally I worked on images of the Sweet Water Farm in Warwick and at the end of the summer I made my fourth trip out to the Bisti Wilderness in New Mexico. ENJOY! – Nick

2024 seemed like a travel catch-up year for me having postponed so much during the pandemic. I made April and November trips to New Mexico to continue my project on the Bisti Wilderness. In June I toured Calabria, notching my sixteenth trip to Italy, and also squeezed in a driving tour of Iceland in September. All provided me opportunities to connect deeply with nature away from the crush of tourism which has engulfed the post pandemic world. At home in the Hudson Valley I’ve begun two new bodies of work — both marked departures from my natural landscape photography. The ‘Supernatural” series taps into imagined worlds, while my new series of toned images alters colors and textures. This past year also marked my forty-fifth year since opening Exposures Gallery. More than ever my photography continues to open a door to understand the world as well as myself.
"Tree Hug" - I start each year with a trip to Lake Placid in the Adirondacks where I'm guaranteed a snowy winter. While snowshoeing I found this heavy laden fir wrapping its arms around a shaggy birch.
"Da-Na-Zin Blue Mesas" - I had discovered New Mexico's Bisti wilderness two years ago. In April, I explored it a second time.
"Moon Glow" - The Bisti is located in a remote dark sky area where natures forces have carved the desert landscape into other worldly forms.
"Spring Mist, New Green" - Early spring in Sugar Loaf the landscape is transformed magically by mist and morning light.
"Seely Brook Jump" - Goosepond Mountain State Park on a very lucky morning - sort of. My boots got tangled in the grass right after this and I went down hard over a fallen tree and broke a rib.
"Forest Understory Ferns" - In July I started a new series of sepia toned images. I've left the original color of the ferns to set them apart.
"Kirkjufell Mountain Glow" - I spent ten days in September exploring Iceland in a four wheel drive camper.
"Spirit Nightbird" - My trip to Iceland and the northern lights inspired another new series of photographs. "Supernatural" blends several images to create imagined worlds.
"Magic Waters" - By book matching an image I create magical symmetry. These unbelievable lava formations I found were perfect to use for this purpose.
"Tree of Life" - My interest in exploring new worlds continued when I returned home to Harriman State Park.
"The Old Golden" - The first apple trees planted at Applewood Orchard in Warwick are over a century old now and brim with fruit in early October.
