The gift of art adds beauty and character to your home
By Claudia Jacobs – owner of Claudia Jacobs Designs, a decorating, redesign and staging business in Goshen. Visit www.claudiajacobsdesigns.com or call 294-8993.The gift-giving season is upon us. It’s the most wonderful time of the year … until you go shopping. With the crowds, the lines, the shopping-cart bumper cars, the crying kids and frazzled parents, no wonder most people procrastinate and wait till the last minute. We go into holiday stress overload and desperately buy the standard token gifts that most people usually don’t need or want. Try thinking and shopping outside the box store.
Artwork makes a lovely gift. Think of the people you have to buy gifts for and then think of their homes, their style, their personality. Keeping all of that in mind will give you great insight into a unique gift.
There are many very talented local artists that offer affordable original art. Nick Zungoli, a photographer whose studio is in the arts-and-crafts hamlet of Sugar Loaf, is one of them. He is nationally recognized and the region’s pre-eminent landscape photographer, and his original fine-art photographs and posters have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.
If you love the magic of the unfolding seasons and changing light of the Hudson and Delaware valleys, Nick has a collection called “Dreamscapes” that portrays the beauty of our region. Each of his works captures a feeling of love for the landscape not often expected in photographs. Other portfolios uniquely reflect the cultural and natural beauty of his extensive travels, including trips to Italy, Ireland, Paris, Block Island, Valley of Fire, Acadia, Bryce and Zion canyons, the Tetons and Big Sur.
Afraid the artwork won’t fit?
Think again. Many people have naked walls just begging to be covered. A decorating faux pas is hanging pieces that do not relate to the furniture below. An example would be a large sofa with a tiny little framed picture floating above it. The scale and proportion are off. Another issue is having family photos randomly dotted on the walls. I am constantly suggesting that my clients create a gallery wall of family photos as opposed to splattering their space with visual clutter.
How about a coffee-table book as a gift? Nick has a book titled “Hudson to Delaware: The Great Valley.” It contains more than 140 color photographs spanning 25 years. And everyone needs a calendar. I picked up a beautiful calendar of Zungoli photos in his studio, with proceeds going to Orange County Land Trust. Check out Nick’s Web site, www.exposures.com, to see many examples of his work.
If you are thinking art is too personal, think again. A gift of a beautiful photo, pottery or jewelry will be treasured. Head over to Sugar Loaf and visit Nick at the Exposures Gallery on Kings Highway and browse through many unusual stores where you will find something special for just about everyone on your gift list, including yourself. Almost every town and village in the region has an artisan shop or gallery where you can find one-of-a-kind gifts. Buy local and support the arts. Happy shopping!
